Assassin’s Creed will take you on an Odyssey through Greece, and it looks incredible

“The fate of Greece journeys with you”

In the newest entry to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, you will not only be involved in the journey, but shape it, define it and even change it. Choice is at the heart of Odyssey, which takes place in a 413 BC Greece. The Spartans are at war with Athens, but the new protagonist is not on a side; they’re seeking revenge against those who tore their family apart.

The first choice the player makes is on who the protagonist will be: either Alexios or Kassandra. Both will be involved in the same story, have the same combat abilities, and potential to form relationships or friendships with NPCs. Odyssey includes a new dialogue system which allows for the player to make choices based on what they want to say, which will will impact future stories. These actions will have consequences, whether that’s being betrayed or forming loyalty. It’ll also be up to the player for whether they trust the NPC or not. These are the first steps Assassin’s Creed are taking into becoming a full RPG.

There will also be a skill tree with abilities to be unlocked, similar to Origins. Combat is built on offence: there’s no blocking, just parrying and dodging. The player is forced to always look to be on the attack, not defence, and new abilities will help with this. There’s also a welcome return to naval battles, which Origins only really dipped its feet into. With Greece being made up of many different islands, you can expect this to be a much bigger part of the game. The ship’s crew are described as “being like your family.”

Huge scale battles will also be included. These can include up to 100 soldiers fighting at once, which will happen over time with the player’s inclusion, or not. It looked very Shadow of War-like, with touches of Syndicate. Apparently, once a battle is won (or lost) the territory will change hands, which was one of the best elements to Syndicate, so it’s great to see that gameplay make a return!

Odyssey is Assassin’s Creed as we know and love it, but with new and exciting elements. You can expect familiar historic figures to appear, such as Socrates, and tense combat mixed with a dynamic protagonist. But mixed in with RPG qualities, Odyssey could be the progression in the Assassin’s Creed franchise that we’ve all been wanting.

Odyssey will be released on October 5th. Stay tuned to TriForce Reviews for the latest news about the latest Assassin’s Creed.
