Massive spoilers ahead for Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rebels!

He’s been making a habit of surprise appearances: from The Clone Wars, to Rebels, and now the Han Solo spinoff…Darth Maul, arguably one of the most interesting villains in the whole Star Wars saga returned to the big screen in his role as part of the Crimson Dawn. What implications could this have for future Star Wars movies? There’s two likely implications…

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a surprising success: depicting Han’s early life and scoundrel beginnings. It doesn’t include one main villain, such as Vader, but makes up for this with plot twists and character development. But if there’s going to be more Solo spinoffs then Maul could potentially be this villain. Seeing as Rogue One perfectly fit into A New Hope, it would make sense for a second standalone Solo movie to build right up Han’s first appearance in the Mos Eisley Cantina. There’s also various mentions of a bigger criminal (probably Jabba the Hutt), which could reference a second Solo movie and look at his history with Han.

Despite this, it does seem unlikely that Han would take on Darth Maul. Could he really beat a Sith? Doubtful. Plus it makes no sense for Harrison Ford’s character to be so skeptical of the Force if he’s actually confronted a Force user before, like Maul.

We know that Maul eventually gets killed by Obi Wan in a great scene from Rebels. But there’s a gap between Maul’s role in Solo: A Star Wars Story and his death scene. Surely Disney will want to fill this gap for one of the most loved villains in the franchise, so how will they do this?

After the finale of Rebels we examined the role that Ahsoka could play in the future of the Star Wars saga. There has to be a storyline reason why she isn’t in the original trilogy, and perhaps this is because she duelled Maul, and lost? That may not be enough ‘star-power’ for a new movie, but it could certainly be a big storyline is a Star Wars TV series, which we know that Disney are currently working on.

Maul’s appearance in Solo’s spinoff seems like the perfect way to introduce Maul (again) to a mainstream audience, and wet the appetites of die hard Star Wars fans. Here's hoping for an awesome Maul versus Ahsoka duel! We already have a good feeling about this!
