What role could Ahsoka have in the future of Star Wars?
Anakin’s Padawan quickly became a fan-favourite in The Clone Wars series. She’s “a little rough around the edges” and she’s “reckless”, but that’s what endeared her to fans (and Anakin) so much. She cares and wants to help others. Plus we get to see her develop throughout The Clone Wars, which builds a strong bond with the audience, despite us knowing what happens to Anakin. So it was great to see Ahsoka return in the most recent episode of Rebels.
Last we saw of Anakin’s Padawan she was engaged in a thrilling duel against her old Master, Darth Vader. But the finale of Season 2 ended in a cliffhanger and we never got to see what happened to her, even in Season 3. But in A World Between Worlds Ezra discovers a passage between time and worlds, which he pulls Ahsoka in to. Ahsoka does not leave with Ezra however, which tells us that she is alive and has her own business to take care of.
It seems unlikely that she will appear again in Rebels otherwise she should have left with Ezra. So what is she going to do? In the canon novel Ahsoka, written by E.K. Johnston, she leads a group of farmers into an act of rebellion against the Empire. But the novel doesn’t indicate that Ahsoka has anything extra she wants to achieve or do. Just like in Rebels, her motive is clear: to challenge Darth Vader.
We already know that there is a lot more Star Wars on the way: from TV shows, to movies, to books. Could Ahsoka have her own spinoff movie? Perhaps, but it seems unlikely. We doubt that Disney see Ahsoka as a big enough character to lead a blockbuster movie mainly because she’s not a huge mainstream character, like Han Solo, for example.
But is Ahsoka a big enough character to be the lead character in a TV show for Disney’s upcoming streaming platform? 100%. People who will subscribe to that service to watch Star Wars shows should already know who Ahsoka is. Plus there’s such a huge story to tell: what happens to her after the events of Rebels? Does she confront Vader again? Why is she not present in the original trilogy? A TV series seems like the perfect way to convey her personality too. Just like how in the book Ahsoka she works with a group of people in a small act of rebellion, you could have 2-3 episodes at a time showcase the different times she supports smaller rebellions.
There has to be a reason why Ahsoka was shown to be alive. She’s such a beloved character to Star Wars fans and there’s so much more content arriving in the upcoming years that Ahsoka has to be a featured character moving forward. Though she may not have the support of Anakin or the Ghost crew, as Ahsoka once said: “I need to sort this out on my own.”
