Ready Player One’s new trailer is full of imagination

Based on Ernest Cline’s hit debut novel, Ready Player One, Spielberg’s newest movie looks to be a massive hit on the big screen too. The most recent trailer provides some more insight into how the OASIS will look and whether it will closely follow the novel’s plot. Be assured: we’re all ready for this one to be released as soon as possible!

The choice of song, Pure Imagination (from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), perfectly sums up the wonder presented in the trailer. The OASIS looks incredible: from video game-like avatars to full out conflicts on a ridiculously huge scale. As Wade (Tye Sheridan) states: “it’s a place where the limits of reality are your imagination.” It’s interesting to note that Wade is speaking to the audience directly here. Perhaps this is just for the trailer, but it seems likely that the fourth wall will be broken here a lot, just like in the novel. Hopefully this is the case as Wade’s character is really fleshed out when he speaks directly to the reader.

There’s a stark contrast presented between the dim reality and the colour of the OASIS. Wade also seems to be cast perfectly, his appearance really links to Cline’s description of the protagonist. But his avatar, Parzival, doesn’t really fit the description. It’s much too Final Fantasy-like, despite the fact that Parzival is actually meant to look a lot more like Wade. It seems that Spielberg wants the OASIS to be quite removed from reality, which isn’t always what it’s meant to be...

But this seems to be one of the only creative liberties that Spielberg has taken with the movie. From what we see in the trailer the script itself looks very similar to the novel, which is great to see. It is quite surprising though that one of the biggest twists in the novel (with Aech’s real identity) is spoilt through the trailer and posters. Maybe Spielberg has added another twist we’re not expecting?

Overall though the trailer indicates that the movie will live up to the great novel too. Ready Player One will be released March 29th, and we cannot wait! There’s a lot of interesting movies coming out soon, but we’re not as excited for some of them, especially Tomb Raider and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
